Two Spartanburg District Five teachers have joined an esteemed group of teachers nationwide who are committed to innovative teaching practices and collectively contributing to student success. Josie Brown, teacher at Byrnes Freshman Academy, and Christy Hewitt, teacher at Florence Chapel Middle School, have both been named "AVID Certified Educators". Only 100 educators from across the country were selected for the inaugural cohort.
AVID , which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination", is more than just a program. In Spartanburg District Five, it is a philosophy that is ingrained in everything we do. AVID enables District Five to serve students who need support in order to succeed in becoming college and career ready. It also helps students to realize their full potential in Advanced College Prep (Honors, Dual Credit, and AP) courses, the most challenging courses the school district offers.
As part of the AVID Certified Educator cohort, Brown and Hewitt, along with other teachers, have demonstrated dedication to continuous reflective practice that is centered on the AVID Foundations of Instruction. Through the unique program, they will participate in deep learning around those Foundations, and create plans to demonstrate their learning through the design of specific classroom experiences.
The AVID Certified Educator cohort is set to kick off this summer.
Congratulations to Josie Brown and Christy Hewitt!
