Spartanburg District Five Schools is proud to announce that three of our campuses have been named among "America's Healthiest Schools" for 2024! The honor, given by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, was announced this week for Byrnes High School, Florence Chapel Middle School, and Berry Shoals Intermediate School (now Berry Shoals Elementary School). This annual recognition honors schools for their outstanding efforts to create environments that promote the health and well-being of students, staff, and families. This year, 879 schools from across 30 states received this distinction, and we are proud to have three of our own on the list!
Both Berry Shoals and Byrnes were honored in the "Bolstering Physical Education/Activity" category, and Florence Chapel was recognized for "Supporting School Health Services". This marks the first year for Byrnes High School and Florence Chapel Middle School to receive the distinction. "We're so honored to be recognized," says Dr. Dineitha Salmon, PE teacher and coach at Florence Chapel Middle School. "This shows we're concerned about the whole child, and we're taking into account their wellness, both mentally and physically."
District Five was among only a handful of districts across the Upstate to receive the honor, and the only district in Spartanburg County to have multiple schools recognized. "This honor shows that Spartanburg District Five is doing everything it can to keep our students, staff, and schools as healthy as possible," says Freddy Coan, Physical Education teacher at Berry Shoals.
